The TERADI 800 is an isocentric
cobalt teletherapy unit, designed to be loaded with high-activity
sources (200 RMM load capacity). Its general characteristics correspond
to a modern design concept but without losing the simplicity that
should characterize a cobalt therapy unit.
The TERADI 800 has a source-axis
distance of 80 cm. The precision of the isocentre remains within
a 1 mm-radius sphere.
The maximum field obtainable at the height of the isocentre is
35 x 35 cm. The achievable fields are regular, either rectangular
or square. The smallest field is 5 x 5 cm (for trimmers at 45
cm). Also available are trimmers to be installed at 55 and 65
cm from the source to lower the effects of penumbra.
The unit is provided with a swivelling head and a beam stopper
or counterweight. The head's swivel allows obtaining large fields
in view that the patient may be placed at great distances from
the source.
The control system is computerized. Interaction between the operator
and the unit is achieved through a computer monitor and keyboard
and a special panel located on the console. Data on every treatment
are registered on the computer's hard disk and may be retrieved
for control purposes. The system has a data file that allows authorised
maintenance personnel to detect faults and solve technical problems.
In the case of kinetic (rotation or arc) treatments, the control
system calculates and determines the angular speed for the rotary
gantry to comply with the established time and angle. It also
supervises the movement of the gantry throughout its travel, correcting
possible movement irregularities and suspending the treatment
should the gantry stop due to any fault. The operator receives
constant information on the progress of the treatment via the
digital clock display. The system is equipped with three independent
clocks that guarantee proper treatment duration and its completion
in due time.
A pneumatic system was chosen for source activation. This system
has proven to be safe and reliable, easy to maintain and quite
simple when the source needs to be replaced. Many source suppliers
can perform this task.
In view that the control system keeps a constant check of the
transit time of the source between the RADIATION ON and RADIATION
OFF positions, should the time elapsed exceed two seconds, the
treatment would be automatically aborted, the SOURCE alarm would
be tripped and the collimator would be closed automatically.
The collimator is fully motorized, with 2-speed opening, closing
and rotation movements. It begins to move slowly, reaching top
speed after a few seconds.
Customers may choose from two types of couches upon purchase
of the unit. The manual couch features a 2-speed motorized vertical
movement, while in the other version all movements are motorized
and 2-speed. All movements except the vertical one may be manually
performed, adding flexibility to the use of the couch and reducing
patient positioning time. Tables are identical in both couches,
with panels that may be removed in one piece or in halves, providing
high versatility. They are also equipped with a tennis-racket
type section and a headrest that may be placed at either end.
Rails may be fitted along the sides of the table for fixing accessories.
