Plan for Wind Power

In September 1999, a Strategic Plan for Wind Power was signed with Spanish investors by the Province of Río Negro. For this plan, INVAP was appointed as the Technological Agent for the province.

As such, INVAP must assess the wind resource and identify possible new locations for wind farms. INVAP will also participate in the construction of high power (over 600 kW) generators, and is to be responsible for the assembly, start-up and maintenance of all the wind farms to be installed in the Province of Río Negro.

The Strategic Plan for Wind Power for Patagonia contemplates the installation of wind farms in the area reaching an installed power of 300 MW, over the coming ten years. Participants to this plan are the provinces of Chubut, Neuquén and Río Negro along with the Spanish firms Endesa and Elecnor which joined to create the company Enarsa for this endeavor.

In Río Negro, efforts to study the wind resource have progressed most in San Carlos de Bariloche. There are plans for a first stage of some eight wind driven generators with an installed power of 5 MW in San Carlos de Bariloche, with the view to reaching 15 MW at the conclusion of a second stage.

Other possible wind farm sites in the Province of Río Negro are in Viedma, San Antonio, General Conesa, General Roca, Sierra Grande, Pilcaniyeu, El Bolsón, Choele Choel, El Cuy and the region of the reservoir Embalse E. Ramos Mejía.

Locations selected in the Province of Neuquén are, Cutral Co - Plaza Huincul, Zapala, Piedra del Aguila, and Chos Malal among others.

The possible locations in the Province of Chubut are, Puerto Madryn, Pampa del Castillo, Salamanca, Sierra Rosada, Trevelín and Sarmiento among others.
