Complex distributed information systems seem to be the best tool for government control and taxing of different resources and economic activities.
For the fishing industry, we have developed and installed our Fishing and Oceanographic Information and Monitoring System (SIMPO), based mostly on remote data acquisition. With a variety of sensors installed on the fishing fleet and on fixed buoys, SIMPO allows for the Province of Río Negro, Argentina, to control the vast San Matías Gulf. The deployment of SIMPO has brought control to overfishing, underbilling and other detrimental practices. At the same time, it allows the local fishermen to export their produce as certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), thus reaching premium markets which pay better prices for sustainably produced sea-food.
For the meat packing, we have the Bovine Slaughter Monitoring and Control System, called PATAGONIUS, which consists of a variety of on-line recording elements along the relevant points on the production line in the plant. This development allows for improved management and planning of the operations, and also installs strict fiscal transparency in them.
