CAREM Project - State of the project

In the technical field, this innovative design was finally consolidated, for which a substantial amount of technical documentation was issued and experimental devices and installations of diverse complexity were built and operated.

The most relevant installations built are the Critical Facility for neutron calculation verification (RA-8, Zero Power Nuclear Reactor) and the Thermal-Hydraulic Test Laboratory, which has the only testing circuit for High Pressure and Temperature conditions designed and built in Argentina, where the conditions of the reactor primary circuit are simulated and analysed.

USD 30 million were invested in the project throughout the last 15 years. If we compare it with other equivalent developments in the international field, the relation between the design maturity achieved and the investment made is highly favourable to the CAREM project.

As reference, there is the SMART (KAERI, Korea) project, for which investment exceeds USD 60 million and no solid conceptual design has been achieved. On the other hand, the DoE (US Department of Energy) has invested USD 19 million in 1999 and assigned USD 25 million for 2000 for its advanced reactors program (NERI), aimed at the search of state-of-the-art design solutions at conceptual level.
