Reactor ETRR-2 (Egypt) - Introduction

Reactor Uses

The reactor is designed to be applied in research activities in the fields of neutron physics and material science; nuclear fuel R&D, radioisotope production; neutron radiography, neutron activation analysis, boron neutron capture therapy, silicon doping and training in nuclear engineering and reactor operation.
The ETRR-2 is an open pool-type reactor with 22 MW thermal power, built by INVAP for the Atomic Energy Authority of Egypt at Inshas, 60 km north-east of Cairo, Egypt.

Development in Egypt

Following an international bid, the Atomic Energy Authority of Egypt (AEA) awarded INVAP a turn-key contract for the construction of the ETRR-2 multi-purpose reactor, aiming at the development of a nuclear technology base, with the ETRR-2 being one of its main tools. For this purpose, the ETRR-2 reactor incorporates many world-class facilities and equipment.

INVAP had full engineering and management responsibility for the ETRR-2 reactor from conceptual design, procurement and construction, to commissioning and start-up.
An effective transfer of knowledge was achieved through the participation of many Egyptian professionals in Argentina and the establishment of a close cooperation with Egyptian companies.
